01 Why Murata?

I studied Japanese language at university and aimed to find a job in a Japanese company where I could utilize my language skills. At that time, I participated in a job search group focused on Japanese companies in Taiwan, gathering information primarily about sales positions in manufacturing and trading firms. After comparing the growth potential and size of each company by referring to their official websites and financial reports, I paid particular attention to Murata, which had experienced significant sales growth thanks to the smartphone boom.

An important factor in my final decision was the positive atmosphere during the interview process. Coming from liberal arts background, I was initially concerned about my ability to perform well with less technical skills and knowledge. However, through several interviews with Murata, I realized that Murata values their employees and fosters open communication style. Moreover, I felt a strong desire to work with the supervisor I met during the interview, which convinced me that this was the right work environment for my future

02 Your Career

I joined Murata Taiwan as a fresh graduate in 2016 and worked in sales department until 2023. During this time, I gained a wide range of experience, including price negotiations, supply and demand management, and sales expansion activities.

One particularly memorable period was from 2017 to 2018 when the supply of capacitors was tight across the electric industry.
We worked closely with the customer service and sales support team in Taiwan and Japan to adjust delivery schedules and supply plans while negotiating with customers to support required delivery schedule. As a result, our internal information sharing, and teamwork became much stronger and we were able to enhance our customer relationship. This precious experience taught me how to overcome difficulties with our organizational strength.

Of course, everything cannot be all positive. When I was transferred to the U.S. as a sales expatriate, I struggled with internal coordination as well as customer negotiations due to lack of skills and experience.
Now reflecting, I realize that the learning from US experience has contributed significantly to my growth. I wish to continue learning and growing as a business professional with positive attitude and challenging spirits.

03 Vision for the Future

The process of receiving orders from customers, planning production, arranging materials, manufacturing products, and finally delivering them to customers is known as "Supply Chain Management (SCM)." In my department, we are working on the "Next Generation SCM Project," a future supply chain initiative to realize Murata's Vision 2030.

I have been involved in this project since the planning stage and I am currently a member of the Demand Management Team. In this role, I am focusing on designing demand analysis operations for the Sales Department and facilitating information sharing across departments. We would like to take this opportunity not only to consider renewing the IT infrastructure but more importantly to review the entire business process. My goal is to clarify business process requirements and redefine value propositions so that Murata's strengths can be passed on to future generations.

I strongly resonate with a message from one of Murata directors who stated, "It is important to leave assets, not liabilities." Based on my sales representative experience, I wish to streamline time-consuming tasks through business reform and enhance the quality of work at the front line. Additionally, I aspire to continue actively contributing by improving my skills as a Business Architect (BA).

Murata for you

What do you think about Murata?

In my opinion, Murata is a global leading electronic component company that can provide reliable "quality" and "commitment" as an industry leader. In addition to its technological capabilities, Murata values its promises to customers and regards the trust it has built with them as an important asset.

As we compete in a global marketplace, our customers' needs vary by region, so we must be able to respond quickly to these changes. For example, we are focusing on initiatives such as RE100, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are trying to adapt flexibly to our customers' production location changes following political environment changes. I believe this is a promise we have made as a global company and industry leader in Vision 2030, "Murata will innovate to create a virtuous cycle of social and economic value and contribute to the enrichment of society."

Working with colleagues from different backgrounds and culture and sharing our values in our work is what makes us a global company. I personally believe that a “global company" goes beyond merely conducting business; it also involves valuing diversity and coexistence.

Personal Life

Photo of Derek Hsieh's private life

One of my new hobbies since coming to Japan is drip coffee. At first, I watched videos and experimented on my own while acquiring the right equipment. I enjoy the time I get to relax on weekends, particularly when I grind coffee beans and savor the aroma that fills the air around me.

Traveling and walking are also important ways for me to refresh myself. Japan is a country where you can appreciate the beauty of four season, and there are many experiences here that you cannot find in Taiwan, such as cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and snow. On weekends, I like to walk in nature; the beautiful scenery and tranquil environment soothe my body and mind. Outside of Kansai, I have also visited the Seto Inland Sea (Teshima and Shodoshima) as well as Kitakyushu (Fukuoka and Nagasaki). Next time, I would like to explore the Hokuriku region.

By taking care of myself, I feel that I can gain the energy to face new challenges while also maintaining the vitality for everyday life.
